George Hilaris

In Medicine and Surgery each case is unique and has its own characteristics. Our main goal is to provide women with the information that is scientifically proven, so they can understand the problem they are facing, and then explain the personalized approach that must be taken for their treatment.
George Hilaris M.D., FACOG

Dr. Georgios Hilaris is a Gynecology-Oncology Surgeon, Head of the 2nd Department of Gynecologic Oncology at “HYGEIA” Hospital in Athens.

He graduated from the Department of Medicine at the University of Patra.

He has specialized in the US in the field of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He continued his studies at the RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.

He has specialized in Laparoscopic & Robotic Gynecologic Surgery and Gynecologic Oncology at the relevant departments of Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California, USA. He completed this specialty in 2004.

Dr. Georgios Hilaris has introduced in Greece innovative techniques and procedures both in Laparoscopic/Robotic Gynecologic Surgery and in Gynecologic Oncology, including the first laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, with systematic pelvic and para aortic lymph node dissection, that was performed in Greece in 2004, as well as the first robot-assisted surgical staging for endometrial cancer in 2009.

His team has also published in an authoritative US medical journal a study of a series of laparoscopic oncological surgeries which was conducted in Greece for the first time between 2004-2008. (You can view a ideo with a compilation of the Surgical Procedures with Laparoscopic Radical Hysterectomy completed between 2004-2008. Please note: The video include surgeries in real time).

Dr. Hilaris’s surgical team is based at "HYGEIA" hospital in Athens and comprises medical specialists of various specialties. His team performs consistently a multitude of surgeries covering a full range of gynecologic malignancies and the most complex benign gynecological conditions. Furthermore, the team uses the most state-of-the-art laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques, and alternatively conventional surgery techniques, when appropriate.

Since 2014 he is the Creator of NPO AWARE - for the awareness and prevention of chronic gynecological diseases - and the Country Captain of the "Worldwide Endomarch Movement" in Grecce as he has successfuly created Endomarch Greece - which organizes different Action Events for the awareness of the Greek general public regarding Endometriosis disease.

He has been a Lecturer of Obstetrics-Gynecology at STANFORD University in California since 2007.

We specialize in the surgical treatment of all forms of gynecologic cancer, including the most severe cases of benign conditions, being highly experienced in endometriosis and large benign tumors (uterine fibroids, sizeable cysts etc).

We use primarily laparoscopic or robotic surgery techniques and we have become a point of reference both in Greece and abroad. Of course conventional open surgery is also a method of choice, especially in advanced ovarian cancer (stage III and IV).

Our team consists of surgeons and physicians specialized in various surgical and pathology specialties. When it comes to complex, severe or very rare cases, we hold a board to decide of the most appropriate approach. Moreover, if deemed necessary by our team, we will also consult our partners in the US, thanks to our long-term collaboration with STANFORD University Medical Center in California.

Since 2007, Dr. Georgios Hilaris belongs to the academic staff of STANFORD University in California. There, acting as a Lecturer of Obstetrics-Gynecology, contributes 100 teaching hours every year lecturing students of the Medical School and surgery residents at the University Hospital. He also coordinates and teaches about laparoscopic, robotic and open surgery techniques to Surgery Senior Registrars at the Department of Gynecologic Oncology.

There, he works closely with his mentors, two leading figures in the field of Medicine, Dr. Jonathan Berek, M.D., FACOG, MMS and Dr. Camran Nezhat, M.D., FACOG, FACS.

Dr. Jonathan Berek is a Professor of Obstetrics-Gynecology and Director of Stanford Gynecologic Oncology Center (Stanford Women's Cancer Center at the Stanford Advanced Cancer Center). He is one of the leading scientists and surgeons in Gynecologic Oncology worldwide, with a wide range of academic and literary work. His writings are considered to be the "Holy Bible" of Gynecology and Oncology for students and physicians around the world.

Dr. Camran Nezhat is a Professor of Obstetrics -Gynecology and General Surgery at Stanford University and UCSF in San Francisco. He is the Director of the Institute for Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery at the said University. He is considered to be the "father" of modern Laparoscopic Surgery. He has pioneered many first-time laparoscopic surgeries which have now become routine procedures around the world. His research and surgical fields focus on endometriosis (especially its more severe forms)
